IASL Meeting Place

Connecting school librarians and school libraries

Hello,
I am new here. I hope to tap into the Collective Brain, and ask if anyone out there can tell me more about school libraries in India (grades K-12). I am particularly interested in their Web sites. I have completed research about school library Web pages, and am very much interested in continuing my research.
Please email me back at cgibson04@jhs80.net.
Thank you very much.

I am also very interested in school libraries in India. I'm going to a small school near Siliguri with some fellow teachers from my school to set up a basic library/bookbank in December this year, and would very much like advice on school libraries in India, including these things:

* library management systems in India
* whether I should go for a manual system or computerised
* advice and support for training teachers/senior students to carry on circulating the books when we go home to Australia.
Buying text books and other books in West Bengal.

I look forward to your responses.

Hi Lee,
Glad to hear that you'll be visiting Siliguri to set up a Library/bookbank.In International School libraries they are mostly using Follet-Desitiny and some other schools are using Alice library management software.Frankly speaking most of the schools are still using manual systems for library operations. You can train local teacher how to circulate books manually. If its affordable and you have long range plans to develop it you can even buy a library software. You can buy books from the leading publishers like Longman,Oxford, etc.I think you can pay a visit to Calcutta and buy your required books. If you need more info you can always contact me through my email id i.e solly_dr@yahoo.com.

Hi Lee,
You wonder whether you should go for a manual system or computerised. I suggest you opt for automating your library collection. It is well worth the investment. As you know, when titles are automated, all library patrons can readily see what's in the collection. I have just started to use Follet Destiny, and it has made a huge difference! Automation makes information more accessible for all. Good luck on your trip.

Hi,
I am S.L.Faisal, an Indian School Librarian. Working with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India.

Under KVS there are more than 950 schools scattering around India. All schools (known as Kendriya Vidyalaya or simply KV) posess enough infrastructure and Libraries. KVS is one among the three Govt. governed organization which recruited qualified (Basic degree, BLISc) Librarins (others are Navodaya Vidyalaya Samithi and Delhi Subordinate Service).

Automation is getting momentum now a days. Visit Library @ KV Pattom to get an idea. KVS is not providing any LMS and libraries are using local software.

Also visit KV Library webpages where you will get links to many KV Libraries with own blogs and websites.

Some other useful sites: LibraryNext and LibZine, Homeworksonline

Also visit the KV Librarians Social Network

Best wishes

Hello Chris,
It is great to learn that you trying to know more about school libraries in India. Let me inform you that school library movement is yet to take off in our country. Surprisingly, many schools here yet don't have libraries. There were lot of education commissions and reports who recommended functional school libraries for quality education. But this was only theoritical - practically school libraries were neglected. Moreover the school curriculum and library activities are not interlinked. The school eduation is more focused on written examination driven by job motive. We need to see school libraries holistically. More material you can find on . This is the only website on school libraries in India. We are in the process of improving it. It would be great if you can send your feedback.

Best wishes
