IASL Meeting Place

Connecting school librarians and school libraries

I would like to do a presentation on how to organize a "BIG EVENT" in your library. I'm thinking of things like author visits, school wide competitions involving reading and the library, etc.

Does anyone have ideas for other Big Events?

Does anyone have suggestions for steps that must take place while organizing a big event.

Thanks for the help.

Dear colleague,
There are numerous activities for the promotion of reading skills. You could consider the following options, all of which have been put into practice and have worked :
-reading marathons
-reading clubs
-workshops with illustrators
-story telling
-visits to book exhibitions
In such a presentation I would include scheduling of event, planning ahead is necessary so as to avoid overlap with other activities. The school budget is another factor to be looked at. Last but not least, promotion of the event so as to attract visitors.

always available,

Daear Nazish,
There are many ways and activities that you can promote reading. But i would suggest you that You start with celebrating Book Week in your school, this will become Big event for your library. You can invite story teller or Any teacher for Read aloud. Choose one local Author as Author of the Week, invite him for the book talk. Custom Parade is intresting activity for younger ones, I mean book character dressup. Book making Compitation. DEAR is a nother very popular activity. Drop every thing and read whole school should participate. You can also organise buddy reading. etc. If you know any Author who is about to release the book, You can request and organise the book release function in your library offcousre you need permision from the school. Above all Angela as rightly said that scheduling of event and planning ahead is necessary.
Hope this ideas may prove useful to you. Al the best and be active all the time..
