Started yesterday and going on till Friday.
Day 1:I made some mental notes on what I heard, especially Ms Kristie Koontz's speech, professor at the Florida State University, College of Information:
1. You may have started a programme you think is according to the library's mission, but when applied, nobody turns up. The reason? You probably haven't researched your user's real needs.
2. Library statistics shouldn't only include lending. The time spent with a user, for example, is just as important a parametre as any book/cd etc circulation. A Greek librarian from the audience said that when she counted "feet", meaning library visits, the percentage of library users was five times higher than the library material showed. The same goes for Internet time and so on.
3. "We should market people instead of library usage", meaning that the trained professionals, are the ones who will see many changes in their lifetimes regarding media (paperbacks, audiovisual, microfilms, Internet....) but are the persons you can count on to guide you through the information maze. I suppose that was the quote of the day.
