News from the IASL Conference.

Hello everyone,
here is the article outlining the winners of the GiggleIT introductory competition:
IASL Conference 2009 Abano Terme
September 2nd to the 5th 2009

Delegates vote with enthusiasm!
The GiggleIT Competition Results.

It was with great excitement and enthusiasm that Dr Ann Carlson Weeks announced the winners of the “Create a New Word for e-Book Competition” at the IASL Conference 2009 in Abano Terme, Italy. Dr. Weeks is a Director of the International Digital Children’s Library (ICDL) and is Professor of Practice in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland. Formerly, Professor Weeks served as Director of Libraries and Information Services for the Chicago Public Schools and as Executive Director of the three youth divisions at the American Library Association (ALA). The IASL supports the aims and vision statement of the ICDL.
As part of the GiggleIT Project’s introductory competition, children of registered schools were asked to participate by creating a new word for e-Book. This competition was a motivational introductory competition to engage the students in Thesaurus and Dictionary usage as they created new vocabulary for the digital age.
The team at GiggleIT felt the term eBook had run its course and we needed a fresh, new term/expression/label to describe our online publication. We hope that such a term will become accepted into contemporary vocabulary worldwide.
From the listed schools, 14 new terms were offered as part of the competition, although over 75 new terms were coined all together.
Delegates at the 2009 IASL conference in Abano Terme were asked to vote on a list of new words that could be used to replace the term e-Book. Delegates were asked to list the terms in order of preference and from this anonymous voting procedure the new terms were listed in order of most votes.
The following results were recorded for the results of the New Word for e-Book competition in order of greatest number of votes to least number of votes as voted by the Delegates of the IASL 2009 conference:

Howdy from Katy in Northeast Texas, where Hurricane Ike dumped a few inches of rain on Sat evening, knocking out power and telephones. Thank goodness for laptop battery and internet aircard! Hoping all is back to normal soon.

I was thinking of Gigglewiki last night by lanternlight, since my daughter Emily had promised us her services as a graphic designer to put face(s) to the character of Gigglewiki when we called her from IASL - Berkeley. May I invite her into this ning so that she can keep up with the discussion as she works on Gigglewiki's public persona?

Looking forward to Gigglewiki's growth!

I am looking forward to hearing more about this Gigglewiki Project. Since I was unable to attend the IASL Conference this year, I am feeling very out of the loop! How does a/the "gigglewiki" tie into the SIG for Children's and Young Adult Literature?
