News from the IASL Conference.

Hello everyone,
here is the article outlining the winners of the GiggleIT introductory competition:
IASL Conference 2009 Abano Terme
September 2nd to the 5th 2009

Delegates vote with enthusiasm!
The GiggleIT Competition Results.

It was with great excitement and enthusiasm that Dr Ann Carlson Weeks announced the winners of the “Create a New Word for e-Book Competition” at the IASL Conference 2009 in Abano Terme, Italy. Dr. Weeks is a Director of the International Digital Children’s Library (ICDL) and is Professor of Practice in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland. Formerly, Professor Weeks served as Director of Libraries and Information Services for the Chicago Public Schools and as Executive Director of the three youth divisions at the American Library Association (ALA). The IASL supports the aims and vision statement of the ICDL.
As part of the GiggleIT Project’s introductory competition, children of registered schools were asked to participate by creating a new word for e-Book. This competition was a motivational introductory competition to engage the students in Thesaurus and Dictionary usage as they created new vocabulary for the digital age.
The team at GiggleIT felt the term eBook had run its course and we needed a fresh, new term/expression/label to describe our online publication. We hope that such a term will become accepted into contemporary vocabulary worldwide.
From the listed schools, 14 new terms were offered as part of the competition, although over 75 new terms were coined all together.
Delegates at the 2009 IASL conference in Abano Terme were asked to vote on a list of new words that could be used to replace the term e-Book. Delegates were asked to list the terms in order of preference and from this anonymous voting procedure the new terms were listed in order of most votes.
The following results were recorded for the results of the New Word for e-Book competition in order of greatest number of votes to least number of votes as voted by the Delegates of the IASL 2009 conference:

Good Morning Pat!
I am a librarian in a school in Ahmedabad, India. I am happy that finally gigglewiki has taken off. I had asked the participants representing Asia, in the regional meeting to look out for this announcement. Lets maintain the same excitement we had while discussing this project throughout! IASL Berkeley has bought us really close! Thanks for that!

Hello, all: Thanks, Pat, for the invitation. I am currently the Teacher-librarian consultant for the Vancouver Board of Education in Canada ... and the Canadian ambassador for the gigglewiki. I have a blog and have been working it to capture the IASL conference experience: see TL Special Weekly Blog . I am not finished as I have still to write about Pat's session and about our gigglewiki concept. I am looking forward to introducing our TLs (local and provincial) to the search for children's humour and await further input. Yes, a hug for dear Isabella too. Miss you all ... Moira

Hi Pat, Barbara and Peter!
I joined IASL just this year. I am currently a Ph. D. student at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA (USA). My job at the moment is teaching Children's Literature and Oral Language for the Department of Language and Literacy Education. I am a full time student. I'm interested in the library as a gateway to all kinds of literacies - print, visual, information, digital, the list goes on. I'm also interested in access to resources, intellectual freedom, and collection development. I had a great time in Berkeley and I'm looking forward to keeping the laughter going here and on the gigglewiki!

Beth
PS, Pat, kisses to Isabella!

Greetings! I am the most recent Past President of IASL and have been involved in IASL in some way for 20 years! (Yikes!) I have worked as a secondary school librarian, a curriculum librarian, a catalog librarian, and a German teacher from middle school up to University level. Currently, I do some work as a Library Consultant and work for a large bookstore, part of a national chain in the USA. Cheers, Peter

Hi Everyone,
I'm the VP Advocacy and Promotion for IASL and Pat's 2IC for this SIG. I lecture in Information Science at Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Western Australia. I am also in the throes of trying to complete my PhD at Curtin University, studying the information-seeking behaviour of the Net Generation (GenY). This looks like it will be a great place to keep in touch. I will start a discussion re- Gigglewiki Project soon. Looking forward to meeting with you all. :) BC
PS Pat, please give Isabella a hug from me.

Hello everyone and welcome to the SIG. As the newly appointed chair of this group, the future looks very exciting and the learning curve will be steep. I encourage you all to introduce yourselves and enjoy this collaboration. To start the ball rolling, I am a secondary teacher librarian who manages an independent learning centre which is a complex including the library, learner support classrooms and an independent learning area which is also composed of a couple of classrooms. The library is now a large learning and teaching area devoted to developing our students' independent learning skills and information literacy skills. I am also a PhD student studying at Charles Sturt University in Australia. My area of research is developing independent learners through school libraries in particular personal interest and motivation.
That's enough from me for the moment. What about you?
Pat
